Valentine's Day. The very utterance of that phrase makes some people cringe. Other people have been planning this occasion for months and are counting down the moments until they get to spend the perfect evening with that special someone.

Valentine's Day first became popular in 496 A.D. by Pope Gelasius I as a holiday for intimate companions to show their love and affection.

So what will the students of the University of Northern Iowa be doing to show their love this holiday season?

Student Russ Boyce is leaning toward a romantic evening.

"I'm getting my girlfriend a flower and a card, than taking her to an amazing restaurant for a romantic dinner," he said.

But what are some single males and females going to do?

"I love Valentine's Day," said student Alex Penno. "It is a great time for showing how much you care about someone. As of now, I do not have any plans but am looking to at least go out with someone."

Student Jacci Linn doesn't have plans for a romantic night out.

"I'll be spending it celebrating my best friend's birthday in Ames," she said. "We plan on going to dinner and making obscene gestures at couples in the restaurants. We got the idea from  www.textsfromlastnight.com."

On Valentine's Day, single people may be left wondering what there is to do other than reenact their favorite Web site and hope to meet up with someone special on the 13th at midnight at their favorite hangout.

Those who do not celebrate or believe in Valentine's Day, the Center for Multicultural Education is celebrating the Chinese New Year on Feb. 13. Students can get their fix with traditional New Year's food starting at 5:30 p.m. in the CME (upper level of Mauker Union).
