Staff furloughs at the University of Northern Iowa are currently being considered in addition to faculty furloughs. UNI’s staff furloughs will likely be affected by the furloughs decided for state employees.

Two unions, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and the State Police Officers Council, have decided to work with Governor Chet Culver to minimize potential layoffs after the 10-percent budget cuts this fall.

The proposed deal would require employees to take five days off without pay before June 30. The union members have until Nov. 25 to vote on the deal.  The Interim Director of Human Resource Services Michelle Byers feels that the university is doing what it can right now.

“It’s an unfortunate situation that the university is in, to decide how to address the 10-percent budget cut,” Byers said. “Right now there are a lot of options being reviewed to determine which is the best for everyone.”

Anyone wishing to learn more about the staff furloughs can consult the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Web site at www.afscmeiowa.org.
