I would like to take a moment to publicly congratulate, and extend a heartfelt thank you, to the students, staff and faculty who presented the "Tunnel of Oppression" on Feb. 24. It was clear that a great deal of time, effort, energy, heart and soul were put into this incredible event. The courage, strength and unity I saw tonight inspired and encouraged me and anyone who attended.
I was glad to see attendance in the hundreds. As we go through our busy days and lives, it is good to take a moment to remember – or learn for the first time–the horrors of genocide, the reality of racism, the injustice of discrimination. It is good to skip our favorite reality TV show to face some actual realities. These realities happen to people that we know, and they happen every single day--not just for an hour or two in the Union.
I am proud to be a part of the University of Northern Iowa. I am proud of the presenters, and proud to say that tonight, I experienced one of the best lessons ever taught at UNI.
