Stepping back and looking at the current life of a typical University of Northern Iowa student, it is no surprise that stress levels seem to be peaking for many. Scheduling for classes often comes with hurdles (waiting lists) and walls (filled courses). It is that portion of the semester where final projects/exams are peeking out while other projects and tests still must be completed. And to top off the stress barometer, budget cuts are threatening the very existence of areas of study and organizations.
There is more than good reason to be getting caught up in the anxieties of everyday life as a UNI student. It may seem an impossible task at times to hold any appreciation for one's current situation. Many in such circumstances will enter "just get through the day" mode while counting down the days to Thanksgiving and winter breaks. Excuses seem to support mediocrity.
Stress-infested life has reached the point where it just seems to be the routine of a typical college student.
With that in mind, perhaps this is an opportune time to try something new: simplicity.
The following is The Northern Iowan editorial staff's one-day, three-step simplicity challenge:
Step one: The night before you commence this challenge, write down whatever you must accomplish the following day. Then, add a couple more simple things to that list that help you escape the craziness of life. Try to avoid technology unless it honestly can facilitate a de-stressing activity. Set your alarm ten or so minutes earlier than usual for reasons that will be explained in step two. Then, get well rested, so that you may possess the health and alertness necessary to avoid stress.
Step two: Wake up, get ready for your day (eat breakfast), then stop. Take ten or so minutes to sit down and read part of a book (or newspaper ... like, for example The Northern Iowan) or simply reflect on the potential of good that can come out of one day.
Step three: Take on the day, being totally devoted to what you are doing at the time in which you are doing it. Give -— your full attention really listen to that friend who you chat with for a few minutes. Try your best to really learn something in each of your classes, respecting the intellect that helped get you into college in the first place. Accept the fact that complications may arise during the day and just roll with them, maybe even with a smile.
This challenge is not meant to be just another thing to add to your plate. Instead, it is an alternative to a routine in which many of us students fall. Who knows, maybe you will have a revelation.
