Two of Iowa’s own will take the stage at the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center in the Broadway musical “Movin’ Out” this weekend.

Julius Carter, who graduated from the University of Iowa in 2007 and Marc Heitzman, an Ames native, have recently joined the national tour of “Movin’ Out,” a musical that combines the well-known tunes of Billy Joel and legendary choreography of Twyla Tharp.

The Broadway hit will be movin’ to Cedar Falls to perform tonight at 7:30 p.m. and tomorrow at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center. Tickets for students range from $12 - $25.

“Movin’ Out”’ features characters that seem to dance right out of radio waves as the show is comprised of a plot strung together solely with dance numbers and music.

“There isn’t dialogue, the dancers tell the story through dance and music, you have to keep your eyes open because there’s so many things that happen,” Carter said.

Billy Joel has become a household name over the years creating 33 top 40 hits since 1972. “Movin’ Out” is staged to several of these songs and many audience members may already know every word to the show before the first time they see it.

“I learned about Billy Joel in my Musical Heritage class, and I know a few Billy Joel songs so I feel like this musical will be more fun because I’ll recognize the music,” sophomore Christina Ilax said.

Familiar Iowa faces, classic music and a story line that can be applied to our current society opens this musical to a wide variety of audience members.

“I would encourage students to go, any type of art related event is important, and ‘Movin’ Out’ speaks to current events and what’s going on now even though its a dated piece,” Carter said.
