A team of high-heeled models and meticulous design directors took to their ‘field' at the University of Northern Iowa's Wellness and Recreation Center Wednesday night as the textiles and apparel program rehearsed the for 17th annual design show, "Chic International."
The showcase is scheduled to take flight Saturday night at 7 p.m.
According to Christie Kafer, executive director and senior textiles and apparel major, the show this year will be nothing like veteran TAPP Design Show audience members have seen before.
"I think some people are expecting that it's always going to be white lights, straight runway, and that's not what it is," said Kafer. "We try to make it different and creative every year."
The annual show is produced entirely by the work of students. TAPP students are not the only ones to put their sweat and blisters into the show, models from across the community and various majors on campus also are involved.
"This year we just want the models to know that the show is possible because of them," Kafer said. "If we didn't have them we wouldn't have a show. We want to make sure they are having a lot of fun."
Last year the TAPP Design Show filled Lang auditorium to the brim with audience members, leaving standing room only. According to Sierra Beagle, a model who is returning for her second year on the runway, performing to such a large crowd of her peers produces a unique sensation.
"Its awesome and nerve-racking all at the same time," said Beagle, an 18-year-old Aplington-Parkersburg High School student. "Your freaking out but you're like ‘wow this is way cool' but it's a weird feeling."
"Chic International" is a free event and open to the public. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. in Lang Auditorium. Following the show, a senior reception and portfolio review will be held in the Center for Multicultural Education.
