Executive Editor and Managing Editor

Interested in applying for Executive Editor or Managing Editor? Requirements of each position are listed below.


Executive Editor

Duties are hire and manage staff; coordinate editorial, news, features, opinion and sports; and manage the entire newspaper according to budgets and high journalistic ethics. Requirements are college level journalism courses or equivalent experience, familiarity with press laws, good writing skills, management and leadership ability. Writing examples must be submitted with applications.


Managing Editor

Duties are hire and manage advertising, production and sales staff; operate the newspaper according to deadlines and direct overall design and manage special sections. Requirements are ability to motivate and lead staff, knowledge of marketing and management functions, familiarity with computer typeset, advertising space and management and knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator design programs.

News Writers


Description

Cover important campus events, controversies, discussions, Northern Iowa Student Government meetings, and local and state government decisions and their impact on UNI students.

Requirements

Writers are required to submit on average at least one article per week and are expected to attend at least one staff meeting a week. Good writing and communication skills and a passion to stay informed necessary; journalism experience preferred but not required. Writers must be willing to learn and improve and must respond well to feedback.

Description

Campus Life writers profile outstanding and interesting students, faculty and staff members, feature exciting student organizations and important events, and cover and review arts and entertainment on campus and in the Cedar Valley community.

Sports Writers


Description

Sports writers cover different athletic events, including football, volleyball, men's and women's basketball, and more; profile outstanding athletes; cover important athletic news; and provide commentary and analysis on Panther athletics.

Requirements

Writers must cover every game of their sport. Profile writers, commentators, and analysts are required to submit on average one article per week. Good writing and communication skills and a passion for and knowledge of sports required; journalism experience preferred but not required. Writers must be willing to learn and improve and must respond well to feedback.

Opinion Columnists


Description

Opinion columnists write carefully crafted columns sharing opinions relevant to students using arguments supported by reliable evidence and cogent logic. Topics can be anything appropriate and relevant to the UNI student body, including issues like diversity, religion, politics, student policies, university events and decisions, etc.

Requirements

Columnists are required to submit on average one column every other week. Good writing skills and clear argumentation required; previous experience preferred but not required. Writers must be willing to learn and improve and must respond well to feedback.

Opinion Columnist

Photographers


Description

Photographers capture photographs to record news, current events and lifestyle stories. Their aim is to capture the best images in order to document an event, tell a story or convey a message.

Requirements

Photographers are required to cover on average at least one assignment per week. An aptitude for photography required; no equipment necessary; prior experience preferred but not required. Must be willing to learn and improve and must respond well to feedback.
