The Cedar Bend Humane Society is hosting Barktober Fest Oct. 24. People of all ages are able to bring their dogs to the event.

The Cedar Bend Humane Society will be holding its fifth annual Barktober Fest Saturday in Waterloo.

Starting at 3 p.m., the public will be given an opportunity to participate in a wide array of activities.

Autumn Ewoldt, Barktober Fest event coordinator said, “People and pets of all ages are welcome to come out and join us. There will be a haunted barn, a bonfire cookout, prizes and a human and pet costume contest.”

Admission is $5 per person and all the proceeds will go toward helping animals and funding the newly-built adoption center. This new center broke ground six months ago and is planned to open early this November.

Along with fundraising, the Humane Society is seeking out more volunteers to help out with its organization.

“The goal is to get people more aware. Our volunteers, which consist mainly of college students, come out and walk and play with the dogs, clean kennels, and also help out with mailings and the newsletter,” Ewoldt said.

Local dog owner and University of Norther Iowa  student Megan Coborn is enthusiastic about the event.

“I think it’s great the (Humane Society) is putting on this event to raise money for the cause. There are so many animals in a bad situation It is a good opportunity to help,” she said.
